On July 23, Yemane Kahasay Andom, a Christian imprisoned for his faith in Eritrea at Mitire Confinement Centre died after authorities denied him medical treatment, according to Compass Direct News. It is believed that he died from complications with malaria and was reportedly tortured while in prison. It is believed his body was secretly buried at the camp. Yemane was allegedly weakened by continuous physical torture and solitary confinement in an underground cell during the two weeks prior to his death because he refused to sign a recantation form. While it is not clear what the contents of the recantation form were, most Christians interpret the signing of such a form as the denouncement of their faith in Christ.
Yemane is the third Christian to die in prison this year in Eritrea. Over 2,800 other Christians are detained in Eritrea. Not one has charged with a crime. Not one has ever been put on trial.
Let me tell how the British rap duo Surrender responded when they learned of how Eritrean Christians were being mistreated by their own government for no other reason than because of their faith in Jesus.
Surrender is a Christian rap duo consisting of cousins K.I.D (aka Kingdom Inspired Determination) and Favour, both from London, England. The duo were raised in Christian homes but it was only in 2006 that the Gospel became real to them personally, and this led to Surrender being formed.
After meeting an Eritrean Christian leader who shared about his life, how persecution had affected him and how Christians continue to be persecuted in his homeland, K.I.D and Favour wrote My Refuge, a moving and inspirational response to the plight of their brothers and sisters in Eritrea.
