Malaysia’s precarious balancing act

Yesterday I read a most interesting blog on Reuters on the confusing balancing act that Malaysia’s government is trying to perform as it seeks to ensure religious freedoms for its sizeable Christian, Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist minorities without, at the same time, offending the sensibilities of its majority Muslim population.  The present government wants to portray itself as reformist by dismantling some of the privileges that were guaranteed to Muslims while at very time when Malay Muslims have taken a more activist approach to the changing religious climate in their country.  All in all, this is a country that definitely needs our prayers.
